On July 17, more than 20 participants of STEAM Palestinian Camp had their first Chinese lesson in Al-Quds University.
"Nihao!" "Xiexie" "Zaijian"... The 11-year-old Mohammed glared at his fingers and counted the Chinese conversation he learned today. "I can write Chinese characters now!" Aya excitedly ran to the whiteboard to demonstrate the Chinese character "Si”. Yara wanted to show her talent as well, on a hand-made paper cap, she drew the Chinese character “Yang” in seal script. Dara said that she likes China's traditional sports project - tug-of-war. “When you direct your teammates and shout ‘come on’, you feel particularly enjoyable.”
The STEAM Palestinian Camp was initiated by the Palestinian Ministry of Education and has been held for many years. This is the first time for Al-Quds University to include the Chinese language and culture for the campers. It is also the first time for Palestinian primary and middle school students to sit in a Chinese lesson. Hasan Dweik, executive vice president of Al-Quds University, said that 160 primary and secondary school students who participated in the project will experience Chinese culture in groups.
As China's economy and exchanges with the world have seen rapid growth, there has also been a sharp increase in the world's demands for Chinese learning. Benefiting from the UK, France, Germany and Spain's experience in promoting their national languages, China began its own exploration through establishing non-profit public institutions which aim to promote Chinese language and culture in foreign countries in 2004: these were given the name the Confucius Institute.
